Discussion About Description Of The City Wuhan In Fang Fang’s Novels

Wuhan is a city with a long history and a deeply rooted culture, but with the time going, people of Wuhan have gradually forgotten this historic and cultural city, no matter the famous urban architecture, and the unique custom and humanity. However, Fangfang, as a female writer, whose works are mostly panoramic description of Wuhan, commits to build the trinity of city, citizen and culture.In this paper, the description of Wuhan is the research object, which is divided to three parts:the introduction, the main body, and the conclusion.The introduction is main to tease the concepts of the urban literature, the image of the city and the city writing, to analyze the relationship of the’the novels of Wuhan flavours’and culture of Wuhan, and to review the research status of Fangfang’s novels.The main body is divided to three parts. The first chapter takes the relationship of city and culture as the pointcut, to study the image and the landscape of the Wuhan, to recall the history and culture of it. Not only the living space but the traditional customs, not only the prosperous trading port but the revolutionary site, not only the local customs but the Hanchu opera, are written in Fangfang’s works. She tries her best to show the vivid image of Wuhan, to reshape the memory of the old city and the contemporary spirit in order to express the worry of the escape of tradition.The second chapter discusses the image of the citizens and their living conditions. Fangfang creates three images of bottom citizen, intellectuals, and the country folks going up to towns. To show the living conditions of the modern society, she describe the trouble of the bottom citizens, the faint spirit of the intellectuals, and the loss of the folks. Fangfang gazes at their dilemma, embarrassment and panic to reflect the anxiety and symptoms of the whole city, which is also the city’s. Although characters in her works die inevitably in the end, Fangfang pours her humanistic feelings into these to break the constraint and difficulty.The third chapter mainly analyses the artistic characteristics of the city writing to excavate the value of culture. Fangfang combines the historical changes with a person’s fate, from which we can see the history of the city. At the same time, Fangfang uses the language of Han flavor and the the language of poetry, to restore the true field of life, and to show the humanistic feelings of this city.The conclusion analyses the value of the city writing from the history of literature, the history of culture, and the history of human spirit, to reveal the closely inner connection between the image of Wuhan and the living conditions of citizens. It is the independent ideology level and the character of Fangfang’s city writing, which can invoke the rethink and critic of readers.
