It has been widely acknowledged that Mu Dan is close to Lu Xun in both ideas and spirit and shares Lu Xun's way of thinking. Like Lu Xun, Mu Dan persists in self-critique, self-reflection, and rebellion against desperation with a conflicting and splitting mentality. Even when facing the bloody reality, Mu Dan courageously preserves his individuality and character. Through a detailed comparison of Lu Xun and Mu Dan in terms of speaking style and lyrical self, this thesis explores how those two most important writers in modern Chinese literary history gain their ability to delve into the depth and width of life and demonstrates the contemporary significance of the artistic works and thinking of those two authors. This thesis also attempts to prove that the character possessed by those two outstanding authors is also the character of authentic intellectuals.
