From the date of its birth, film has never stopped learning from the literature. Novels, poems, essays are all important source of subjects, emotion and even techniques for film. This thesis is dedicated to a part of the novel film——the film adaptation of the lyrical novels. With focus on adaptation and using a number of excellent films as example, the thesis explored from different angles and summarized the characteristics of the adaptation of lyrical novels into films. The thesis consists of four chapters. Beginning with defining the concept of lyrical novels, chapter Ⅰ summarizes the current status and research of the adaptation of lyrical novels into films, which laid the foundation of the entire thesis; Chapter Ⅱ focused on the study of lyrical novel adaptation into film script. This chapter discussed the adaptation of novel contents from the following five aspects, i.e. the choice of perspectives, addition and deletion of plots, transfer of the details, reproduction of mental activities, and metaphors and symbolism. Chapter Ⅲ focused on the analysis of film language. From the perspective of the three main components of film—sound, picture, and rhythm, the thesis discussed the reproduction of’emotion’,’interest’ and ’sentiment’ in novels with audio—visual effects in films. Furthermore, the thesis summarized the quality requirement when films were adapted from lyrical novels. Finally, by comparing two films (《Nuan》and 《Rensheng》)adapted from two different types of novels with similarity in ’emotion’, we emphasized the difference between film adapted from lyrical and traditional novels.
