August Strindberg is a famous dramatist in the nineteenth century. He is respected as the"Father of Modern Drama"with Ibsen and Chekhov. There are two parts in my thesis: one is for Strindberg's theatre practices, and the other is for his four unique chamber plays: Stormy Weather, the House that Burned, the Ghost Sonata and The Pelican, which are written for his own"Intimate Theater".Never closet dramas does Strindberg write, his scripts are always suitable for playing. Besides a playwright, Strindberg is even an actor, director and theatre manager. These stage experiences have proved an invaluable help to his creation. Meanwhile, he has promoted the development of north European independent dramas with his working behind the scene. Therefore it's necessary to study Strindberg's experimental theatre practices for his plays'researches and the Scandinavian dramatic history.Four chamber plays, which Strindberg writes for his own intimate theatre in 1907 are different from the traditional realistic dramas, and now have become the classic ones. Along with playwright's mystical religion, his dramatic stages express the day-to-day life as a wholly deep secret and absolutely a terrible distressful misery. Every character of four plays is in shame and in pain. Moreover, the form of drama is unique. Symbol is used madly. Line, visual and audio arts are all extraordinary. The chamber plays are transformed into musical violent passion by inimitable creation, which focuses on the tune. So as some serious classic ones, these chamber plays have still attacked lots of theatre practitioners, audiences and theatre theorists nowadays.
