The"V+N"idiomatic collocation is a fixed phrase of synonymical verbs which is composed of verbs and nouns or gerunds with or without prepositions. On one hand, the idiomatic collocation can be distinguished from a free phrase by its strict restrictions on the words selection. On the other hand, the idiomatic collocation differs from the idiomatic expression, in respect that the combination allows a certain extension to some extend. Therefore, the idiomatic collocation can be classified as a words combination between free phrase and idiomatic expression. This kind of words combination has its own character. In a"V+N"idiomatic structure, the verbs will be changed into dummy verbs because of the semantic weakening. As a result, it only has phraseological and kinonymic meanings, while the concrete meanings are expressed by the nouns combined with the verbs. The meaning of a whole idiomatic structure is composed of the synonymity of the verbs and the literal meaning of the nouns, which differs greatly from the dummy verb used as a notional verb. Under this siutation, the dummy verb has a concrete literal meaning. According to the extensive meanings of the dummy verbs, the author divides the verbs with the"V+N"idiomatic structure into six groups. Afterwards, the author makes a careful research on their semantic characters.In addition, the author also makes a research on the semantic characters of the nouns in the"V+N"idiomatic collocation. In conclusion, the intensive research on the"V+N"idiomatic collocation has a great and positive significance on further study on semantics, language-teaching and machine translation. |
