There is a special subgroup of verbs in modern Chinese, which mainly play agrammatical function but itself does not indicate the specific meaning, so we callthem “the Dummy Verbs”. Such as “jinxing(进行), jiayi(加以), yuyi(予以), jiyu(给予), geiyi(给以), zuo(作)”and so on, these verbs have its own special structure but atthe same time they show a difference from the transitive verbs. Though many scholarshave studied these kind of verbs, there are no results on its grammar teaching inmodern Chinese. Based on the previous studies, this paper analyzes the semanticfeatures of the dummy verbs and discusses the similarities and differences of the lightverbs and dummy verbs from the comparative approach of English and Chineselanguages. The purpose of the contrast is to provide the reference for those Chineselearners whose native language is English or for those who speak English as anintermediate language. In addition, this paper also studies the dummy verbs from thesecond language teaching and puts forward related suggestions in order to slove theteaching space of the dummy verbs.
