Located in the southeast of China, Fujian province developed comparatively later than some other provinces in the history of ancient China. However, a large number of masterpieces of rock art were made by the ancestors there and they are so ancient and mysterious that even modern people are puzzled by them. In my hometown, Hua'An County, which lies in the south of Fujian province, there is a well-known cultural heritage site—Hua'An XianZiTan Rock Art, which is called "A Mystery in Thousand Years". This Rock Art was discovered and recorded in the ancient Chinese Literature in Tang Dynasty, more than 1,000 years ago. Not until the early 20th century, however, with the fieldwork which Professor Huang Zhongqin from Lin Nan University conducted there and the research paper published subsequently by him, more and more attention and interest was paid to Hua'an Xianzitan Rock Art by the academic community and scholars.On the 28th February 2007, following Professor Zhang Yasha and Proffesor Gong Tianfu, the author conducted a one-day fieldwork on Hua'An XianZiTan Rock Art. After reviewing lots of literature on this topic, the author realized a fact that although there have been many articles and records about this rock art since Tang dynasty, no one had systematically studied or sorted out the history of Hua'An XianZiTan Rock Art. As far as the author is concerned, the study materials about this rock art are abundant and with clear characteristics of different stages, so the rearrangement and organization will be critical foundation for the further study. As a result, the author decided to choose this topic as his master graduate dissertation.During the writing procedure, the following three main research methods are used: data index, Chinese literature research and comparison. By tracking the past research, the article follows several steps and reaches some achievement as follows. First, the article classifies and reassesses the past research on the Hua'An XianZiTan Rock Art. Second, a series of further study on the stages, the current research and the prospects for the future are discussed in order to seek characteristics and rules of this rock art. Third, the author connects the research history of the Hua'An XianZiTan Rock Art to the cultural development of the south region of Fujian province so that its basic characteristics could be mastered. Forth, the article analyses the reasons for the gloomy situation in the current study, as well as looks forward to the developmental tendency of the future research work.The dissertation consists of four chapters with approximately 35,000 words.In ChapterⅠ, the author collects and classifies the ancient Chinese literature recording Hua' An XianZiTan Rock Art prior to Qing Dynasty. Meanwhile, accompanied by the latest scientific research, the constructive and positive meaning of the early research is pointed out and the weakness is listed as well.In ChapterⅡ, the author traces the social historical background of Professor Huang Zhongqin's study on Hua'An XianZiTan Rock Art, explain the procedure of his fieldwork, and analyze the influence of his study on China's academic community, especially after the period of 1980s.In ChapterⅢ, by comparison, the author systematically classifies the research of the representative scholars since the foundation of New China on Hua'An XianZiTan Rock Art. This chapter reveals the feature of multi-angles and multi-subjects and has open-minded, meaningful argument which produces the positive influence on the further research on this field and reflects the prosperity of the research on Chinese rock art.By far, with the collection and classification of the research literature, we have had a clear perception of the study of history of Hua'An XianZiTan Rock Art. Based upon it, in the following and the last chapter, ChapterⅣ, the author tries to reassess the past research and do a series of further study on the stages, the current research and the prospects for the future to seek the characteristics and inner law of the study history of the Hua'An XianZiTan Rock Art. What's more, the only understanding of the study history is not enough for the further study, so the author analyses the root reason why the current study is in a depressing stage and look forward to the developmental tendency of the future research.
