Japan has always been regarded as one of the advanced countries in the field of cultural heritage conservation which has been at the forefront among the Asian countries, whether considering its legislation or practice. Today, many experts and scholars are to introduce the experience of heritage conservation of Japan to China in order to promote the work of our own. As an exchange student, I had been in Japan for one year when I was a first-year graduate student. The full learning experience was including the taste to the charm of traditional Japanese culture, Japanese history and the contemporary Japanese society. In the field of cultural heritage conservation by using the opportunity to visit the real fields, I am going to find out the contents for writing this dissertation. The aim of this dissertation is to explain the thoughts on the work of cultural heritage conservation in Japan. The main idea in this dissertation is to estimate the advantages and disadvantages, especially the disadvantages, in the work by means of studying the case of heritage conservation of the four castles as national treasures in Japan with my own experiences from the history and museology methodology. In this dissertation, the existence of the four treasures, Matumoto, Inuyama, Hikone and Himeji in present-day survival as a kind of museums will be discussed via their development in history. Base on the Museum Law in Japan, the status quo of these four will be mentioned. The theme of the four treasures is a huge rage one in fact, so the typical examples I take are the importance. The dissertation is going to introduce this in the introduction and chapter two. From the chapter three, the introduction will be revised to the castle town. In Chinese scholars' opinion, Japan is a country which put forward the idea of "the great cultural heritage". The "great" has contents of not only the intangible cultural heritage but the global contents. It is necessary to consider the function of castle town as well as the daily life of the common people who live in with the social flows. This dissertation is going to lay stress on the human as a main part in the work of cultural heritage conservation. The discussion will be based on the field work also. The next main point what this dissertation is going to analyze is the sense of conservation of Japanese people in chapter four. The study sphere will be limited on the local autonomy, treasuring the traditional skill, and the commercialized culture. In this chapter, the juristic issue will not be focus on. The strong area consciousness is important and the thesis is going to discuss the influence made by it, too. Another part is going to be mentioned here is the modern media. The question is how to get the profits combine with modern media and the work of cultural heritage conservation. At the end, some words will be used to explain the international cooperation in heritage conservation. The aim is to broad a new field in the work both in China and Japan.
