A Report On The E-C Translation Practice Of The Women In The Castle (Chapters 1-3)

This is a report on the English-Chinese translation practice of The Women in the Castle.The book was published in 2017 and written by famous American writer Jessica Shattuck.Set in WWII,the book tells about the life of three widows in a Germany castle.Their experience is not only a microcosm reflecting the tremendous trauma in people's body and mind brought by the early war,but also a people's spiritual journey in which they rebuild the hearts with courage,get out of the shadows and achieve self-redemption.The first three chapters tell three stories,including Benita's reunion with the old friend Marianne,acquaintance with her son Martin and the love in the teenage years.The language of the whole text is beautiful and graceful,especially the vivid and exquisite description of scenes and characters.It helps us to recall the history of hardship and struggle in the last century.In addition to introduction to the background and significance of the rendition in the first two chapters,the report mainly focuses on the difficulties and methods of translation in Chapter Three and Four.In the practice of translation,the main difficulties are concentrated on the translation of specialized Germany words,long sentences,tropes,parallelisms and onomatopoeia as well as the grasp of the entire text style.Thus,various methods are applied,such as annotation in lexical translation;division,inversion and turning phrases into clauses in syntactic translation;following the original syntactic order and literal translation in rhetorical translation;and the transition between spoken and descriptive language in discourse level to achieve coherence and cohesion of the text and make the translation more faithful and smooth.By virtue of working on the translation practice,the translator has a deeper and comprehensive understanding of the historical novels.Before translation,the relevant historical and cultural backgrounds and national customs,etc.,should be in-depth studied,so as to overcome the cultural differences and make the translation in line with the original style.In addition,the difficulties and deficiencies in translationpractice are summarized,and the translation experience is drawn on from it,with a hope to further improve translation ability and provide other translators with valuable references.
