In the early years since the foundation of New China, there emerged a dispute named"the dispute between singing the national and the Bel canto"in the vocal community. This dispute, which focused on singing methods, has aroused extensive interests in the musical world in China. Musical theorists, singers, composers, media and common people all joined in it. The dispute has lasted for several decades and has touched on topics from vocal performances, singing methods to the historical variation of the aesthetic ideas of vocal art and even the transformation of musicians'thoughts. In the end, the government's management department for art acted as a mediator and unified the views into one single idea ---"to absorb the essence of western culture while seeking for the diversification of singing style". This discussion and exploration, which emerged in a specific historical cultural context, has laid foundation for the blooming situation in New China's musical field after it. Today, the great accomplishments made in the field of China's vocal performance have direct relation with it. With this dispute as its study object, this paper conducts a thorough comb centering the background, cause, start and end of this academic discussion and makes a comprehensive survey on the relevant academic reaction in the theoretic field. It tries to base itself upon the contemporary time and seeks to find the common aesthetic pursuit about the development of vocal art and the inheritance to the excellent national traditional culture by synthetic, systematic and deep theoretical sorting and analysis. Meanwhile, it also aims to find out academic ideas which may have inspiring meaning to the development of China's modern vocal art from this study.
