| The existence of big ancestry is a distinct phenomenon in ancient history of China. This thesis chooses Lu Ancestry in Fanyang as a case study.Its time spans about seven hundreds years from Wei and Jin dynasties to Sui and Tang dynasties.Firstly,it gives a description of family tree of Lu ancestry,then a detailed analysis of social statue,marital customs,family doctrines and religious beliefs of the ancestry.From that we can get a clear picture of Lu ancestry.The forefathers of Lu ancestry were descendant of Qi with family name called Jiang.It was so named after because their privileged territory from the emperor was Luyi.In Qin Dynasty,posterity of the scholar Luao of Lu ancestry immigrated to Zhuoshui district,and settled in Zhuodi,regarding Fanyang as their dominant area. Accordingly,they were called "Lu ancestry in Fanyang".Their forefather Luzhi was well known for his study on Confucianism in Han Dynasty and this laid a foundation for the growth of Lu ancestry.Lu Yu acted in high position in the government of Cao and Wei in the period of three nations co-existing.Later,Lu Qin,Lu Ting,Lu Zhi,and Lu Zhan all held key positions in the government.Lu Xuan was the first to be officer in central government during the reign of Taiwu emperor of Beiwei period and Lu ancestry then became a celebrated family in north China.Owing to disintegration of Beiwei,wars took place frequently,and the whole society was thrown into turbulence. Lu ancestry was attacked and their position descended.As a result,some of them were forced to find official positions in Beiqi and Beizhou.At the beginning of Tang Dynasty,the emperor tried to weaken the strength of official family in Shandong. Province,so Lu ancestry experienced a period of hard time until the middle of Tang Dynasty.There appeared eight prime ministers in the history of Lu ancestry who took part in dealing with national affairs.As far as marital conventions of Lu ancestry is concerned,they paid great attention to the family position in society.Its affined choices were mainly confined in several big families with fame:Cui family in Qinghe,Zheng family in Xingyang,Li family in zhaojun,and Li family in the west of Long,added by Wang family in Taiyuan and Cui family in Boling.During the period of Beiwei and Beiwi,Lu ancestry built marital relation with royalty,which disappeared at the end of Sui and Tang dynasties.As to the cultural tradition,all the members of the ancestry regarded Confucianism as the basic knowledge;especially they emphasized the study of three books on Li.A lot of scholars emerged,among them Lu Zhi had the most prominent achievements.Their outstanding contributions promoted the development of calligraphy,painting and historical studies as well.During Sui and Tang dynasties literature production turned to be main pursuit taking the place of study on Buddhist scripture.Poem creation flourished and poets from the ancestry were much acknowledged.With regards to the doctrines of Lu ancestry,they had the tradition of mastering ample knowledge.They were grave and prudent in attitudes and behaviors. They thought highly of morality in addition to knowledge.They advocated fealty, faithfulness,reverence and loyalty.They cultivated themselves by worshiping Buddha and reciting Buddhist scriptures.This thesis carries on an examination on Lu ancestry in Fanyang covering Wei,Jin, Bei,Sui and Tang dynasties.The record of 286 members of the family is complemented on the basis of the former existing family tree.It focuses on the official position,marital conventions,doctrines and religious beliefs of Lu ancestry.In general,Lu ancestry kept its continuity on political position,social reputation,roots of family,and doctrines without much break.The history of Lu ancestry is an epitome of prosperity and decline of ancient ancestries affected by politics,economics,society, ethics and religions in the medieval period. |
