Being an oriental famous ancient capital with a city's history of more than 3,000 years, a capital's history of more than 850 years, Beijing has profound historical traditions, which makes the charm and context of Beijing come down. As Beijing is keeping on its way to modernization, the protections of historical traditions in Beijing are in an extraordinary period. The key point of such protections is how to balance the relationship between modernization and historical traditions protections of this ancient capital. However, Beijing has been facing confliction on such aspect since P. R. China was founded 60 years ago. Other ancient capitals in the world have been facing this problem too. They have successful experience as well as painful lesson, which are worth using for reference for Beijing. This thesis tries to provide some references to Beijing on such aspect by comparing and analyzing the managements of several typical ancient capitals abroad and Beijing on handling such relationships in every period during the modernization course. This thesis consists of seven parts:In the first part, the author narrates this thesis's research background, research significance and defines the concept of historical tradition to be the substantial category. Part two is the general introduction to the research on the relationship between modernization and historical traditions protections in domestic and foreign cities. Part three is the choice of comparative objects and their general situation. The comparative objects include London and Paris in the west, Tokyo and Seoul in the east. The choosing reasons are explained. Besides, evolutions and historical characteristics of ancient capitals are introduced. Part four is the practical course and actualities of historical traditions protections in home and broad, which analyze the course and actuality of historical traditions protections abroad. Besides, the course and protection system of Chinese historical traditions protections. Part five is the influence of urban modernization course on historical traditions and the comparison of management. In this part, the influence on four ancient capitals abroad is introduced respectively. Besides, their management are also concluded respectively . Part six is the problems and their causes of Beijing's historical tradition protections. This part analyzes the problems and their causes of Beijing in detail. Part seven is the experiences and lessons which may be worth using for reference for Beijing. Basing on Part five, the correct relationship between historical tradition protections and modernization is outlined. Then, the author elicit some experiences and lessons that may be suitable for Beijing by analyzing such aspects as Protection Consciousness, protection ideas, theoretic studies, Legislation, Administration, capital security, planning and public participation, etc.
