One important feature of the laterary circles in the late Yuan Dynasty is the occurrence of distinct regional literature schools, which distinguish one from the others in light of main ideas,cultural traditions, cultural propositions,etc. Meanwhile, being influenced by the social turmoil and various ideologies, these literary schools interacted with each other and people involved had to confronted themselved with multiple choices in the fields of politics and culture. Consequently, the literati in the late Yuan Dynasty displayed complicatedness and contradictions when considerring their personalities and literary thoughts.The thesis takes Chen Ji, a poet who lived in both the late Yuan Dydasty and the early Ming Dynasty, as the research object, this thesis is aimed to analyze the connatations of his literary thought and its origin, then to demonstrate the complex circumstances of the late Yuan Dynasty's literary circles.This thesis consists of three chapters. The first chapter discusses in details the contradictoriness and the complicated connatations of Chen Ji's literary thought. Chen Ji's attitudes towards the fuction of literature and its aesthetic value are intricate and inconsistent. The second talks about the cause of Chen Ji's literary thought's appearance, which also accounts for the complicatedness of the literati's literary thoughts in the late Yuan Dynasty. The third pays attention to the relation between Chen Ji and the literary circles in the Yuan Dynasty. In the end ,based on the research into the duality of Chen Ji's literary though, the thesis reveals the literati's multiple choice and the diversity and richness of the literary thoughts at that time, which were usually overlooked in previous studies.
