The essay makes an analysis on the modern style of Hemingway's short stories from narrative perspectives. The essay consists of five parts. The introduction is about the general state of Hemingway's short novel-writing and internal and external analyses on Hemingway, stating the subject and outline of the essay. The first chapter analyzes on basic theories of narrative perspective through two parts. The first part makes review on the evolution from traditional narrative perspective to modern narrative perspective, while the second part introduces different understandings on narrative perspective classifications by the narrative theory field through two sections. The first section is about Renette's narrative perspective theory, including the distinction of voice and mood, and his introduction of focalization theory and trichotomy of narrative perspective of focalization, while the second section is about amendments and improvements made on his theory by Mike Behrens, Rimon Kenan and other academicians following him.The second chapter and the third chapter form the main body of the essay. In the second chapter, the author analyzes on the general characteristics of application of narrative perspective in Hemingway's short stories, including achieving situational narration by external focalization, reflecting subjective narration by internal focalization and making narrative frames by limited omniscient perspective. The third chapter makes deep analysis on the influences on the writing style of Hemingway's short stories by narrative perspectives through two aspects. One is the objectification of narration, which consists of subjective presentations of persons'exterior words and deeds from external focalization, direct revelation of persons'mental state from internal focalization, and the reflection of touchable and appreciable situation through internal and external focalization. The other one is the blankness of narration resulted from the specific limitations of narrative perspectives. The blankness creates suspense and different angles for readers, and forms the style of"Iceberg".The conclusion part points out the feasibility and significance of establishing relationship between the narrative perspective and the style.
