2008, it is the 30th year of China's reform and opening-up to the outside world. People inspect the changes of Chinese society from various perspectives over these years. If film is considered as an important visual approach to record the social changes of China, I would like to find a representative whose works present every turning point of China's reform and opening-up, shape typical characters of social transformation, and reflect the political changes of Chinese film industry as well. In this context, I chose Xiaogang Feng and his works as my research objective. Feng started his career in 1981, his creative works just ran through the whole 30 years of China's reform and opening-up, experienced the most important transitions of Chinese society. In his works, we can read the typical characters and events of this period.Feng's films are basically realistic. Regardless of the absurd or documentary techniques, he always focuses on the ordinary people and their lives/feelings/fates. These stories of ordinaries are perfectly reflecting the fate of the most people during the society-transforming period in China. These characters have been the cultural symbols that are familiar to the Chinese audiences. On the other hand, since the significant changes of Chinese film policies made in 1998, Feng has been involved in almost every crucial change since then. In another word, we can see Feng as one representative director of Chinese contemporary film production. His works are mirror images of the social transforming during China's reform and opening-up. His works have been reflecting the changes of society, literary environment, as well as the film industry. This paper attempts to exam the Xiaogang Feng's 15 years film creation over 30-year of Chinese social and film industrial changing. It then discusses the relationship between the development of Feng's creation and Chinese social transformation.
