In this paper, I will first theoretically explore how the film "A One and A Two" bytheTaiwanese film maker-Edward Yang is related to Lacan’s mirror theory and, toboth the Chinese and the Western philosophies. Then by comparing Yang’s work andthe works of his comtemporary-Hsiao-Hsien Hou, I will try to approach the initialbasis of the easthetics of modern films in Taiwan.Note: Yang is known as one of the most influential film directors in90s, whose filmcareer officially started in1982when he was asked to direct and write a shot in theseminal Taiwanese New Wave collection. Yang examined the modern Taipei in acalm spectator’s perspective. His sharp and accurate shots objectively reflected thechanges which commercial culture had brought to the modern Taipei.
