The concept"Jing(境) beyond the Image(象)"has a far-reaching meaning in the tradition of Chinese ancient poetics.Actually,"Image"and"Jing"are important poetic categories themselves,and their dialectic relationship is exactly demonstrated in the middle of Tang dynasty.Instead of being accidental,this phenomenon has had intrinsic logic and lineage of development.However,the explanation of this concept, rooted in the interior of traditional poetics,is in a tendency of over-simplification and confusion.Meanwhile,although the domestic research has made some accomplishments in the metaphoric study area,it is hitherto boggled in the translation of the western theory and the interior level of linguistics.In my point of view,the research conducted on these two categories could be integrated into the"Ontological Metaphoric"perspective.This thesis is aimed to trace the foundation of the"The opinion on the relation between Speech and Meaning"and the impulse of its coming into being on the basis of while taking western theory and academic thinking as the lens,and further establish the inner connection of"Image"("象"),"beyond Image"("象外") and"Jing"("境").Although the concept of"metaphor"originated from West,the similar ideas and concept has also been plenty in Chinese poetic tradition.As such,a comparative frame could be established through a brief carding on the opinions of metaphor in both East and West.Therefore,the perspective of"Ontological Metaphor", considering the metaphor as the direct reference between the language and existence of human being,on which this paper stands,could be proved.Thus,the investigation of"Jing outside of the Image"as a metaphor based on this angle is deemed to enter into the bottom of the language(speech).As such,the inner nesting cubic structure of"The opinion on the relation between Speech and Meaning"could be shed on light in the auxiliary academic eyesight of structural semiology and introduction of western deconstructive philosophy strategy as the comparative perspective.Further,the surpassing and complement of the"abyss"between the"speaking"and the"meaning"could become the logic starting point and original impulse of the generating of metaphor. On this basis,we can explore the generating force of the alteration from"Image"to"beyond Image",and then to"Jing beyond Image":as the basic metaphoric category in Chinese traditional poetics,the concept"Image"itself includes a tension between"Tao"and"beings",which endows itself as the authoritative method of"saint people explores the ultimate meaning".Yet,the principle material attribution of"Image"urges people to convert to pursue"beyond Image",Following,the anxiety to figure"beyond Image"gives birth to"Jing beyond image".In the absorption of the influence from Buddhism and Zen,the"Field out of Image"in mid Tang dynasty poetics is conducted to"genuineness"from the surpassing of secular world,while leading into"beauty"based on the interaction between sentiment and scenery.Now that,the concept"Jing beyond Image"could satisfy the expectation of surpassing the abyss between the speaking and the meaning.Upon that,the intrinsic logic pedigree of the generating of"Jing beyond Image"could be established formally.This thesis may help us go deep into the level of ontology and language to get better clarification of inner relation among"Image"("象"),"beyond Image"("象外") and"Jing"("境").As such,it might lead to exact understanding of"Jing beyond the Image"in the context of mid Tang dynasty poetics.
