In the history of western philosophy, Soren Kierkegaard linked the past with future as a bridge, and his thoughts had a great impact on the later religion, psychology and existentialism. But when mention the existentialism, we often think of Jaspers, Heidegger, Sartre and others. However, the pioneer of existentialism—Kierkegaard was paid little attention to. This paper attempts to re-examine the underlying meaning of his philosophical thoughts according to the thread provided by Kierkegaard, and whose core is the concept of dread. Firstly, this paper places great emphasis on reviewing the important status of the concept of dread in the individual existence, the cause of generating and its classification. Secondly, it analyzes the two strengthening states of the concept of dread, demonstrates the two types of despair and the significance of existentialism of sin, and indicates that dread is the inner driving force of returning to the true self. Finally, this paper also reviews the impact of Kierkegaard's concept of dread on later Jaspers, Heidegger, Satre and other philosophers of existentialism.
