China suffered from an increasingly serious national crisis after the Sino-Japanese War in 1894. The western powers came to China one after another, competing to occupy more territory of China . They set up rental areas by force and set off a wave to carve up China.Due to the fact that German rented Jiaozhou Bay and Russia invaded LuShunkou , Britain , as an old colonial empire , forcibly leased Weihaiwei in 1898 to preserve its monopoly position and competitive advantages. In order to maintain its colonial rule in Weihaiwei , Britain set up Chinese Regiment to achieve its purpose of using Chinese to contain Chinese . So in early 1899, Chinese Regiment was founded in Weihaiwei . After a period of colonial education and military trainings given by the British imperialists, Chinese Regiment became a tool of the British imperialists to suppress the people against colonial rule in Weihaiwei and even created the bloody Massacre of WeiHai . After the outbreak of the Boxer Rebellion , Britain adopted the Chinese Regiment into its military system , known as'the 1st Chinese Regiment'.It participated in the whole process of the invasion into Beijing and Tianjin as a part of the Eight-Power Allied Forces. the Chinese Regiment also'honorably'became the only representative of Britain in the Eight-Power Allied Forces's capture of the city of Tianjin .After Beijing was seized , the Chinese Regiment took part in the major military parade held by the eight powers in the Forbidden City. The Chinese Regiment never showed mercy either in their suppression of their own unarmed fellow men or the Boxer Rebellion or their fight against the officers and soldiers of the Qing Court. They never showed fear. Because of their'bravery and illustrious military exploits', they won praise from both the British government and the western media. The Department of the British Army specially designed a token for the First Chinese Regiment with the pattern of the gate of Tianjin on it. Furthermore, they awarded these'brave soldiers'the Victoria Medals. The British colonial government also set up a monument to honor those killed in battles in Weihai. In 1902, 12 men were selected from the Chinese Regiment as representatives to Britain to participate in the coronation of the king Edward VII. These soldiers betrayed their motherland and the people to serve as the lackeys of the enemy and executioners, which was a honorary that occurred in the late nineteenth century in Weihai .It was a great insult to the entire Chinese nation. My aim is to uncover this long lost history of humiliation and give people a lesson-----national shames should not be forgotten and we Chinese should be independent and strong.
