In this thesis we used many methods, such as language material analysis, test and questionnaire, as well as some scientific statistical methods to research and analyze the different usages, the grammatical order, and objective acquisition of the Chinese particle "CAI"—a multi-function adverb in Chinese—with the hope that we can find some rules on its acquisition, and discover some explanation for those phenomenons that we found benefit our Chinese teaching to foreigners. This work can be divided into 7 chapters. The first chapter is the preface. In this chapter, we provide some basic information about the thesis, including the researching purpose, the methods used, and the value in doing it.In Chapter 2, we reviewed some relative research about Chinese particle "CAI".The third and fourth chapters are the most important sections of the thesis. Here we analysed and concluded the grammatically correct order and main usage of "CAI", and came up with many assumptions about its acquisition, especially its objective acquisition in SLA. In order to support our assumptions, we used many research methods, such as language materials test and questionnaire applied to foreign students to know the real acquisition situation of "CAI" by foreign students. In Chapter 5, we analyzed all of the mistakes and errors that we found in language material which come from student essays about "CAI", and tried to explain the reason they made those mistakes. In Chapter 6, we discussed the relationship between the instruction order and the objective acquisition of "CAI", and analyzed some paradoxes or contradictions of these two issues in reality.Chapter 7 provides a brief summary of the thesis and asks some questions that should both catch your attention and continue to be researched concerning teaching Chinese multi-function adverb "CAI".
