As an artistic form of early human culture, deformation is not only a symbol of the national inherent vitality, but also has a high awareness value in the national consciousness, mental structure, ethical values, beliefs and other aspects of behavior. In this paper, the writer tries to discuss the function, value and psychological origin of the Deformation Motif in the Zhiguai novel before the Tang Dynasty. The article is divided into four parts:Introduction part,the writer defines the meaning of the deformation at first.In this paper.Deformation includes external morphological changes and internal changes in the spirit. The external morphology change refers to the distortion of the individual of life species and types (biological attributes), what can be seen is physical changes,but inner spirit may be the same as before, such as people changing into a tiger, a fox changing into a man, etc. Inner spirit changes which the individuals of lives in the species, types (biological attributes) between the "living" and "death" remains unchanged, mean the differencese in the spirit of the connotation between emotions and cognition, such as ghosts after death. Then, the writer outlines the deformation motif research on the Zhiguai noval before the Tang dynasty at present. The current data collected shows that deformation Motif study focused on the historical evolution process of the deformation itself and its characteristics, and have done an in-depth research on the historical reasons of its currence and development,and research on the impact on later literature is quite comprehensive.ChapterⅠ: The classification of Pre-Tang Zhiguai novel's Deformation Motif . According to functions and features of the deformation Motif in the Zhiguai novel before the Tang Dynasty,it is classified into four categories, which are emotional type, function type,symbol type and Gremlin. "Emotional-type" refers to "deformation" occurring for some strong emotions, in order to achieve the "deformation" individual's main wishes which is its unfinished business and the deformation is non-autonomous. This deformation is divided into the Revenge type, Sad-resentment type, Compensation type and Shame-based type. Function type refers to the "deformation" as a kind of magic or the means to achieve a certain purpose,and the deformation is independent and can be controled by a conscious human ,which can also change back. The deformation can be divided into gods, Buddha, Ghost deformation,and the deformation of diseases and the natural deformation vest in their individuals. Symbol type refers to the deformation occurred in the specific circumstances, and the meaning of the deformation has a certain metaphor, which may be not to speak out directly due to some social reasons, or in order to create a mysterious atmosphere, suggesting that the deformation individual's extraordinary. This chapter is divided into two aspects. The first section is the test that goes beyond time and space.Distance is the basis of imagination on time and space, and the deformation which varies on its magic form distances itself from the real life, resulting in extrordenary in the time and space. Section II, people communicate with object.According to the different communicable individuals, it is divided into three parts ,which are objects taking the initiative to mix with people, people taking the initiative to mix with object and the both mixxing naturaly.Due to different social and historical conditions, the significance of deformation may be distinct, but it is hoped to gain ideological, psychological and emotional comfort from the deformation of its own, which as the ultimate goal has not changed.That is the significance of Deformation Motif which this article discusses.Owing to my time and energy limited, this article dose not discuss the specific characteristics of each period, it is expected to be complemented.
