Chinese Liberal Intellectuals To The Left In The 1940s. On The Historical Trend

This paper attempts to use the multiplex perspectives of historical background,culture and mode of thinking to analyse the thought history of Mainstream Chinese intellectuals who from liberalism to the left wing during the 1940s.During the 1940s,there were lots of free intellectuals held the viewpoint that if we wanted our motherland to become rich and strong, we had to change our political system and turn into a free and democratic country firstly. But this thought was contradicted with the rule of Kuomintang. The Kuomintang suppressed the words and deeds for democracy by free intellectuals. Besides this,the rule by Kuomintang was so incompetent, for example,the chaos,corruption,poverty,warfare,disaster,etc,these phenomenons could be seen everywhere in our country.The free intellectuals inherited the tradition of "qingyi" which held by the scholar-bureaucrat in ancientry.when the free intellectuals criticised the Kuomintang, they always used moral means. The Kuomintang was considered the Belial, there were full of moral sense in the free intellectuals' minds.Therefore,between the free intellectuals and the Kmindang,there was no possibility for compromising.And at the same time,in contrast with the Kuomintang,the pursuance on justness and equality by the Chinese Communist which was gave the free intellectuals a good sense. Along with the relation that between the Kuomintang and the free intellectuals was deteriorated gradually,the free intellectuals believed the Chinese Communist was the hope of china at last,then they joined the left wing.By this analysis,we can find out that the confrountation between the free intellectuals and the left wing is not absolute,when they have the same recent goals and means,they would be possible to act toghter. The change on thought of the intellectuals,for instance,from improvement to revolution,from near Great Britain and America to Soviet Union. The historical trend was reflected in the field of thought and culture,which was the the general trend of Chinese political changes in the twentieth century, and this trend could enrich our comprehension on the complexity and variety of people's thought and political action.
