This thesis focuses on the tombs of Sui and T'ang Dynasty in the north of China as academic subjects. Through the analysis of the structure of tombs and burial accessories, the thesis divides north China into three regions: Zhaoyang district of Liaoning Province, the north of Hebei Province and the south of Hebei Province, furtherly three phases are divided in very region. Finally it makes a comparision between the tombs in North China and Central China to sum up the characteristics of Sui and T'ang Dynasty of its studying region.The first chapter of the thesis is introduction. It analyses the conception of North China on details, and states the current situation of the research on the tombs in this region.The second chapter is the emphasis of the thesis. It's composed of three parts. The first part is the study of the tombs of Zhaoyang region. All the tombs are divided into three phases according the structure of tombs and burial accessories. Brick tombs have great majority in numbers, and stone structure tombs and earthen seaft tombs have minority relatively. The structure of tombs has mainly squares, curved squares, circular tombs, coffin—shaped appearances, boat—shaped appearances and ladder—shaped appearances. Circular tombs are the most popular all the time. The burial accessories mainly include pottery and porcelain containers, which are used daily. In addition, earthen and pottery figurines are common in the first and second phase of this region. Bronzed decoration is also found in a large numbers. The second part concentrates attention on the tombs in the north of China. In this region, it also can be divided into three phases. Curved—squared tombs are most and has one horse—hoofs—shaped appearances. White porcelain has more in numbers than Zhaoyang region, however bronzed decoration has less. The third part pays attention to the tombs in the south of China. In this region, Curved-squared tombs and earthen cave—chambered tombs are the most in numbers, and circular tombs has only one. White porcelain is the most in these three regions. In the other hand, bronzed decoration is less than the other two regions. The third chapter makes a detailed comparision between the tombs in North China and those in Central China, and summarizes the peculiar characteristics in this region. Circular tombs are popular and pottery figurines have Mulong, Yiyu, Guanfengniao, Futing and Yangguan with no appearance in Central China.The fourth chapter analyses the reason and fountainhead for the circular tombs and these special figurines.The last chapter is the conclusion of this thesis, summing up the studying results and raises the issues deserving profound research.
