This article studies the words of time in the book A Dream in Red Mansions (the first 80 charpters) using the theory of 3D modern Chinese grammar. The aim is to analyse these words through the aspects of grammar and semantics. It tries to demonstrate their connotations and ranges; and to explore the characters of the usage of these words in that period by the methods of quantitative and qualitative analysis, description and explanation. The purpose of writing this article is not to raise and explain a academic problem; but to show their usage features in the book A Dream in Red Mansions (the first 80 charpters), and studies their usage development.There are five chapters in this article. Chapter one is introduction, in which the writer introduces the background; outlines the studies of the words of time and language in the book A Dream in Red Mansions (the first 80 charpters); and shows the academic methodology. The chapter two is divided into three parts.The first part sets up the standards of how to catalog the words of time and defines their scope. The second part classifies them according to different standards, which offers a base for grammatical and semantic analysis on these words. The last part part sums up the characteristics of word-building. Chapter three analyzes their combination ability and syntactic function. The words of time in the book A Dream in Red Mansions (the first 80 charpters) can be integrated with the time words, numeral, adverb, pronoun, preposition, direction words etc. They can act as subject, predicate, object, attribute, adverbial modifier, and complement etc. Chapter four summarizes the features of these words from semantic view. In chapter five, the writer first makes use of the cropus from Center for Chinese Linguistics PKU and chooses some representative words of time in the book A Dream in Red Mansions (the first 80 charpters). Then she decribes and explains their semantic meanings; and tries to show their semantic development and usage futures. Generally speaking, this article analyzes the commonality of the words of time in the book A Dream in Red Mansions (the first 80 charpters) from chapter two to chapter four, while chapter 5 tries to describe and explain the individual characteristics of these words.
