The paper discusses topics about contemporary sculpture, including aesthetic standards, methodology, artistic accomplishments and artistic personalities, according to the saying of Kongzi- "Hui Shi Hou Su" (The business of laying on the colors follows the preparation of the plain ground). On the basis of self-examination and self-reflection, the writer tries to research into the quintessence of traditional Chinese culture, find inspirations for contemporary art, reorganizing his own artistic viewpoints as well as encourage himself.The three parts of the paper are:Part I. The origin of Kongzi's saying--"Hui Shi Hou Su", its two famous illustrations in history (the illustrations by Zheng Xian and Zhu Xi) and its implication in this paper (the extended meanings in aesthetics)Part II. The inspirations for aesthetic standards of "Hui Shi Hou Su"1. "Hui Shi Hou Su" represents a high aesthetic standard"Su" (plain ground) in the saying refers to simplicity and conciseness. Being purified and distilled by art, it demonstrates elegance and generous presence and results in the ideal state of "Su Yi Wei Xuan" (the plain ground for the colors).2. "Hui Shi Hou Su" fully integrates "polish" and "natural substance". (The master said, as to a man, when his natural substance overcomes his polish, he may be an un-educated man from the village. While, his polish conquers his natures, he may be a secretary recording the historical events. One can only be a true gentleman when he has both polish and substance suitably blended.)Only when one knows how to consist the forms and the contents of art, can he reach a higher state of aesthetic standard.3. The supreme goal of "Hui Shi Hou Su" is the perfect expression of the spirits in works of art.Ancient Chinese works of art laid strong emphasis on the expression of spirits. This can prove the importance of the spirits for contemporary Chinese sculpture.Part III. The requirements and inspirations of "Hui Shi Hou Su" for contemporary sculptors1. The ability of analysis and the initiation for expressing spirits in arts are necessary qualities for contemporary sculptures.2. To reach to the state of "Hui Shi Hou Su", one needs to return to nature after refining and polishing. This is not only a constant process of studies and self-reflection, but also a process of "the negation of negation".3. The requirements on artistic personality of "Hui Shi Hou Su" for contemporary sculptures...
