Line in Chinese and Western painting has been seen as an important factor in painting style. As differences in their thought and culture, aesthetics, the use of materials in the areas of difference, cord exhibits different spirit. Traditional Chinese painting has a long history, and figure painting as the first independent mature paintings which line as a form of basic elements from beginning to end, thus reflecting the art features on the most representative.The representative of the neoclassical painter artist Ingres in Western painting is an outstanding master with the line. He adheres to the principles of the tradition of the classical realist painting and figure paintings. However, his works also suffered dispute, people in his paintings were seem some approximate performance of oriental elements. But his painting style by many modern Chinese painters of love.For such a brilliant artist themselves, if people only think about the Chinese and Western aesthetic taste difference and simply seem the Ingres'works as "realistic", Chinese painting as "Impressionism", which is inappropriate. Because seemingly they belong to the different cultural system, with their different characteristics, but actually there is a coupling among. So the line as the most basic elements of the painting, which is the most direct reflect this some features.This article is to make the point, under the framework of comparison Chinese and Western painting, on the one hand, taking the combination of traditional Chinese culture, the artists and their works, recalled the character of line in the development of Chinese traditional figure painting; on the other hand combined with Ingres ideal and painting, analysis the characteristics and creative significance of the line in his works. Finally, by depth comparing and discussing the similarities and differences, we will strength the understanding of the concept of Ingres'art, and recognited the rich spiritual connotation of Chinese traditional paintings.
