In the modern society with accelarating globalization, film and television, as an important media of cultural communication, has become an easy access of Chinese audience to foreign cultures. Characterized by popularity, variety and immediacy, it plays an indispensable role in cultural communication. Under the influence of Korean fad, Korean film and television works are taking a greater proportion in the Chinese market, which gives priority to audiovisual translation between the two languages of Korean and Chinese. This thesis starts with a bibliography of some representing translation theories, including "faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance" of Yan Fu, "faithfulness and clumsiness" of Lu Xun, and functional equivalence of Nida, with an aim to provide theoretical basis for audiovisual transltion practice. The author has also analyzed the feasiblity and necessity of thoes theories. After specific study of audiovisual translation from the perspective of functional equivalence, the author comes to the conclusion that its ultimate goal lies in achieving the same understanding and feelings in the target audience as in the source audience, which will hopefully shed some light on audience-oriented audiovisual translation. As a branch of translation studies, audiovisual translation is of great significance. The author classifies it in terms of medium, language conversion and translated versions, and compares it with regular literature translation. While literature translation has unified channel of meaning conveying, audiovisual translation enjoys a variety of means of communication, which leads to more time and space restrictions in practice.Due to languagae and cultural differences between China and Korea, there are many difficulties in translation from Korean to Chinese. This thesis aims to provide a brand-new perspective in this respect with the application of such theories as functional euqivalence. It analyzes how functional euqivalence is applied and reflected in audiovisual translation from the four aspects of lingustics, stylistics, culture as well as aesthetics with specific examples in the Korean TV series "Full House" In the end, the author also suggests some practical principles adressing the restrictions and characteristics of qudiovisual translation, namely target audience priority, accuracy, comprehensibility and coordination. This thesis also points out that functional euqivalence can provide theoretical guidance to audiovisual translators. However as stated by many translation theorists, complete functional equivalence is impossible, therefore we should only take it as an objective rather than a standard.
