Translation Report Of Retirement Preparation (the Fourth Chapter) From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence Theory

Applied translation is a kind of pragmatic translation which not only conveys information but pays attention to the effect of information transmission. With strong practicability and wide application, it involves all areas of politics, laws, economics, technology and cultural life. No matter which position it takes in history, it has no doubt that today applied translation takes the predominant position. Therefore, it becomes an important problem that what kind of translation theory should be used to guide the translation practice. Combined with the specific translation practice, the paper introduces the guide meaning of Nida’s functional equivalence to the translation of popular science readings.Retirement Preparation written by Nan Hezi is served as a corpus for this translation report. From the view of Nida’s functional equivalence theory and through the analysis of the original text types, the author illustrates the rationality of adopting this translation theory. Combined with case analysis, the author proves further that functional equivalence translation theory mainly means the conditional change of forms based on conveying the meaning correctly, that is, conditional linguistic form change on the premise of "functional equivalence". In this translation practice, the author follows four principles in Nida’s functional equivalence theory, which not only have theoretical significance, but also have practicability.The report shows that the translator should follow the principle of functional equivalence theory when translating popular science writings, i.e. applied translation and lay emphasis on equivalent information transmission and the effects of information reception between target text and original text. The author also expects that the translation strategies, principles and methods discussed in the paper will be helpful for the translator to cope with the translation of popular science readings.
