According to Max Weber's theory of modern human society, self-discipline, as an important concept, contains three requirements:independence, equality and self-sufficiency. The art of self-discipline says that art and other ideologies, such as politics, religion, philosophy, etc., are separated from each other. Art does not subordinate to any other ideologies, and also has its own unique criteria for evaluation and law for development. However, the concept of self-discipline itself is a synthesis of contradiction, which determines that the self-discipline for art as a utopian idea. It is full of struggle between self-discipline and other-discipline in the creation and criticism of art. In conclusion, self-discipline for art is in a dilemma. The dilemma is displayed in two ways:one is that creation is suppressed and pervaded; the other is that aesthetics is not the only character of art. However, the dilemma promotes the improvement of art. The contradiction between self-discipline and other-discipline constitutes a tension which leads the colorful landscape of art. We must find a break point of the two sides, thus the way of the development of the history of art is opened up. Without the dilemma of self-discipline, it would be a problem that art exists whether or not. This thesis attempts to show the dilemma from ancient till now, and investigate the reasons and meanings based on the previous research.
