Pride and Prejudice and Anna Karenina are two novels written in 19th century. The former is written by the outstanding British female writer Jane Austen; the latter is created by the greatest Russian realist writer Tolstoy. Ever since their publication, they have been popular among readers and literary critics and already attracted a lot of attention. The inheritance of human civilization and the integrity of literary development make similarities among characters and incidences in different times and different regions. Tolstoy is quite different from Austen in many fields such as social environment, attitude toward life, influence of social thought and writing style and techniques. However, the protagonists under their pens have something in common—the destiny, the reason and personalities. Therefore both of the characters share some similarities in different situations. When literatures are analyzed, in order for readers to recognize profoundly the theme and background and social significance, etc, it is needed to begin from analysis of characterization of characters. The author of this thesis tries to analyze the two heroines of the two works—Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice and Anna Karenina in Anna Karenina, and find two heroines'similar personalities between them and aspects leading to their different destiny including social aspect and individual aspect. On these basis, the author changes the position of two heroines, and makes an assumption which is worthy of thinking of.Feminism focuses on the female subjectivity and the awakening of feminine consciousness. Females are no longer pure angels or evil devils. They possess their own traits. The thesis starts from the love stories of Elizabeth and Anna under the patriarchal society, through a comparison between the two heroines'time, pursuit, personality and destiny, seeking their love trails and discovering their feminine consciousness, exposing their different destinies and social significance, thus indicating that their love stories do not only stay on social levels and that their personality has relationship with their destiny, which is the inevitable result of the society and development of personality. Through the analysis and comparison of the differences between them, the thesis presents the improvement of women's position and feminine consciousness with the passage of time. Exactly speaking, from the perspective of feminism, the author tries to present both female characters'similar feminine traits, such as pursuing equality and love, and gives people nowadays with advice of respecting female rights and guides women to recognize their own pursuit, creates conditions for women's self-development.Based on the views of dialectical materialism and historical materialism, this thesis is going to analyze, understand and demonstrate problems which the two heroines face in a historical and objective way. A combination of literature review and text reading will be mainly used to gather existing research results and dig out problems.
