The research history of rhetoric can be traced back to ancient Greek and Roman times, so it is obvious that why people have been paying so much attention to rhetorical studies. Rhetoric is used more widely than ever before, so more and more people are interested in rhetorical research. Rhetoric is indispensable to our life, but why people use rhetoric? What is the motive and purpose of rhetoric and what is the reason of emerging rhetorical motive and purpose? All these are the important factors that lead to the best effect of rhetorical behavior.This paper answers the above questions from the standpoint of broad rhetoric. Based on the theories of western new rhetoric and Chinese rhetoric, this paper illustrates the association and difference of rhetorical motive and purpose and the factors which affect the realization of rhetorical motive and purpose.In the core of the paper, analyses are made to the reasons of the emergence of rhetorical motive and purpose by applying the theories of psychology and philosophy. This paper explains that rhetorical motive and purpose originate from psychological needs, such as aesthetic needs, esteem needs and self-actualization needs. When the research of psychological needs is put into social situation, rhetorical motive and purpose come from appetency. Objective existence triggers rhetorical motive and purpose. Human thinking is the prerequisite to realize rhetorical motive and purpose. Human thinking establishes a reasonable relationship between objective existence and rhetorical motive and purpose.
