This thesis is the study of classroom question-answer discourse, guided by the theory on modern sociology, especially based on four important theories of interaction theory---- socialcultural perspective, exchange theory, symbolic interactionism and dramaturgical approach. After discussing five forms of questions and two categories of answers, this thesis makes an empirical research into the classroom question-answer discourse, on the basis of naturally occurring first-hand data, we hold that the classroom question and answer discourse serves five functions:language input and output; negotiation of meaning; intermedium function; dramaturgical role play and exchange function. It touches upon some major issues in actual teaching and reveals some important implications for autonomous learning. Functions of question-answer discourse and implications for autonomous learning will all benefit the fulfillment of the ultimate purpose of EFL teaching in China.
