Metaphor And Translation Of The Cultural Vocabulary

In recent decades, the development of cognitive linguistics has provided new angles and methods for the interpretation and research of metaphor. As a language phenomenon as well as a cognitive means, metaphor is one of the most important ways for human beings to understand themselves and the world. This thesis studies metaphor from the prospective of culture in the framework of cognitive linguistics; meanwhile, under the guidance of cognitive metaphorical theories, the thesis researches on the translation of cultural words. First, the thesis expounds the development of cognitive linguistics and the achievements it has made, which lays a theoretical foundation for the whole research. Second, because of the close relationship between metaphor and culture, the understanding of metaphor is determined by cultural background. The thesis, from the angle of culture, analyses the similarities and differences of Chinese and English metaphorical connotation and the factors that produce the differences. Last, the thesis applies the cognitive metaphorical theories to the research on the translation of cultural words and sums up the principles and strategies on the translation of cultural words.
