With the rapid increase of interaction and exchange between China and other countries,it becomes a necessity for China to present itself comprehensively to the outside world. In this way the other countries can understand China better.Culture,as the core of a nation,is an essential part of a country's most treasured heritage and will tell the world of this country. The Cultural History of China introduces the development of Chinese culture, the main features of Chinese culture and how these elements have affected and influenced the formation of the characters of Chinese people. The Cultural History of China is a teaching material used by the course of An Introduction to Chinese Culture, which has been conducted by professor He Xizhang in Huazhong University of Science and Technology(HUST).The materials, written by He Xizhang, the former dean of the School of Humanities of HUST,are in the form of a handout which enable students to better understand the course and the Chinese culture. The handout includes description about Chinese mythology,Chinese religion and philosophy, historical events and many quotations from classical Chinese works. It covers a wide range of aspects in Chinese culture and shows professor He Xizhang's unique views on Chinese culture. The report is based on the translation of the Chapter II The Cultural Values of the Surviving First.Chapter II mainly introduces Chinese people's cultural values of survival. It explains how Chinese people adjust to the nature and the environment, why they put surviving in the most important place, how Chinese religions and philosophies like Taoism and Confucianism influence their characters and attitude toward life, and what their ideal of living is.In this part, there are many quotations from classical Chinese writings and cultural words containing rich cultural connotations. This makes the materials more difficult to translate. So an accurate understanding of the source text is very important before translation. In fact, all the translation difficulties and problems found in this translation practice are common but typical in the translation of literary and cultural texts. So it is necessary and significant to sum up the problems and the strategies employed in solving those problems.Under the guidance of Culture Translation Theory, the translator analyzes these difficulties and proposes some strategies to solving the problems, including transliteration and further explanation, addition, literal translation and free translation. In the end of the report, the translator summarizes the translation report and lists the further problems to be solved and implications of the research.
