During the modern times of China,The later days of Ming dynasty was a sort of times which was known especially as its uproariousness and grotesquery. Tang xianzu,As the most outstanding dramatist in Ming dynasty, was an eccentric. His status in the Chinese literature history and dramatic history was known widely but his accomplishment in the theory of literature was known by few.In fact,he,as an ideologist, got considerable achievements in terms of the Theory of Literature.Tang xianzu's literary idea is a whole as a spirit being, which it is difficult to categorize. It has two trends:The first is'Yan Qing'whose tenet is romanticism, claiming that we should reflect the happy life of population by the Literature; The second is'Cheng Qing',whose tenet is realism, claiming that we should perfect the personality of ourselves and criticize the decadent society by the literature. This two kinds of trends seem to be contrary, yet just the contraries with which the author leads to the viewpoint of this paper:the duality of the literary idea of Tang xianzu. There are three parts in this thesis.Chapter One:the author studies how the duality of the literary idea of Tang xianzu come into being in the context of history. In terms of inside cause, the ideologies of the Confucius and the Buddhist had an influence on the literary idea of Tang xianzu,so did teachers, friends and ethos in terms of outside cause. It is accepted in the academia that the literary idea of Tang xianzu mainly learned from two aspect:One is left-winger ideology of Wang approach learning from his teacher Luo rufang; The other is the Zen,which is an important buddhist sect, learning from Da guan master. When turning to the ethos, the author would like to say that the romanticism and the realism come to influence the literary idea of Tangxianzu.Chapter Two:To contrast to the context of History in chapter one, the author studies what formed the'Yan Qing'and'Cheng Qing'by'The system of rites and music'in the context of literature, and then explain the foundation of'Yan Qing'and'Cheng Qing'and the conversion from 'Yan Qing'to'Cheng Qing'in the context of the literary idea of Tang xianzuChapter Three:The author generalizes about the noumenon of the literary idea of Tangxianzu as "Qing " and thinks that Tang xianzu's studing the noumenon of'Qing'twice formed the duality of the literary idea of himself. Using the noumenon "Qing",The author wants to interpret'Yan Qing' and'Cheng Qing'logically in this paper. In order to do this, firstly, the author uses'noumenon',a great word in philosophy,to interpret the meaning of'Yan Qing'and'Cheng Qing'in general terms.Secondly, studing the Tang xianzu's productions, the author analyses particularly the meaning of'Yan Qing'and'Cheng Qing',which is presented in the text,to analyze each character of two sides of the duality.Thirdly, the contradiction in the "Qing" noumenon of Tang xianzu reflects the collision being his mind.In other words,it is not only a sort of collision between the background of Li Xue and his thought, but two couple contradictions which are ignored when we study'Yan Qing'and 'Cheng Qing'as well.
