The pursuit of modernization has brought great economic success to China while the deterioration of environment has become more and more obvious as its sub consequences. As one of the most widely used media, film excels others with its advantage in constructing and spreading ecological concept using visual way to represent the reality and weaving fantasy. Therefore, a new film genre has appeared the ecological film.Since the first Chinese ecological movie was produced, the Chinese ecological films have developed for 20 years. In this dissertation, I reviewed the representative ecological movie from the year 1989 to 2009 which choose the environment protection, ecological problems such as the ecological balance as their major subject. By describing the general structure of the Chinese ecological industry, I try to reveal how it changed to construct a ecological concept in Chinese film during the past 20 years and analyze the difficulties and problems that the Chinese ecological films are facing now; further more, I give possible solutions for future development. As the ecological crisis getting deeper, it has become a responsibility for Chinese film makers to attract public attention on this problem as well as help understanding it by discussing environmental and ecological issues in films. I believe the development of Chinese ecological films has just started and so has the research and study on it. Therefore, my research is only basic; the greatest contribution lies in the review of the 20-year history of its development. I hope it can provide some reference for future study on this new film genre in China.
