This paper examines the nature, types and functions of quotation in the perspective of discourse and intertextuality. We study rules and patterns of its performance in various styles, and plagiarism is discussed.The first chapter is the introduction. It introduces the origin of this topic, what has been studied, the content, the methods, the value and the source corpus. Meanwhile, we analyze the relationships of quotation and related concepts (intertextuality, parody, quoted, etc.).The second chapter discusses the rhetorical motives and practical significance of quotation.The third chapter analyzes the quotation in the form of tags, divided into marked and unmarked. Marked quotation discussed marks, printing, typography (font change, etc.), marker words; Unmarked quotation discusses the simple reference mark (figures, Source, etc.) and the complex quotation (quotation to the structure and the "re-hating" of the discourse).The forth chapter briefly reviews the traditional rhetoric quotation. We analyze the definition, classification of rhetoric quotation, and point the limitations of traditional perspective. At the same time, we take rhetorical effect of proverbs quoted as example, reflecting the superiority of the new discourse perspective.The fifth chapter has discussed the performance and the functions of quotation in detail in the different styles. In the news style, the relation between quotations and texts displays prominently in the topic uniformity. The news style pursues authenticity, so it lets events' litigant speech, let persons who stand in the different standpoints speech. In the legal style, the relation between quotations and texts unifies closely. Quotations of laws or cases must satisfy the new text environment, and it must act according to the existing essential factors, choosing the appropriate law or the case. The literary style is discussion's center; its quotation is most free and widespread. In literary texts, quotations mainly use each kind of external text words in the narration process. Mostly is the description quotation (psychological description, environment description and so on), and they constitute the narration. At the same time, author's appraisement and the declarative quotations manifest the ideology involvement and the intervention. The literary style uses quotations widespread, and it will expand the intertextuality to summit. In addition, we also discuss the scientific style.The fifth chapter analyzes the norms of quotations. At the same time, we study plagiarism in a discourse perspective.In conclusion, quotation is not only a rhetorical pattern, but also a way to formalize texts. If we can analyze it from the point of texts, we will get more information about intertextuality.
