Objective:The left-at-home children's problem is unavoidable in the civilized progress. Their especial plight may lead to many mental problems. The present research, being established in psychology characteristics and combining with the left-at-home children's psychological needs, is aimed at investigating their mental health and social development, exploring the path of the relationship and presenting adaptable and achievable mental educational strategy.Method:From consciousness and sub consciousness, the research using the Mental Health Test (MHT), Piers-Harrris Children's Self-concept Scale (PH), Children's Social Desirability Scale (CSD) and Kinetic Family Drawing (KFD), investigates the left-at-home children's mental health and social development. And it establishes Structural Equation Model to exploring the influencing path of the left-at-home children's mental health and social development.Result:The left-at-home children's MHT total score, irritability score and terror score is prominently higher than the score of the non-left-at-home children. But the MHT total score of the male left-at-home children is significantly lower than the score of the female left-at-home children, and the junior high school students'score is prominently higher than the score of the primary school students. In self-accusation scale, the score of the left-at-home children whose mothers go out to work is prominently higher than the score of the children whose fathers go out.All children, the left-at-home children and the non-left-at-home children in Piers-Harrris Children's Self-concept Scale score are significantly lower than the norm, which shows that the level of rural children's self-awareness is generally low, but the left-at-home state and gender have no significant effect on self-awareness. The primary school students'score in PH Scale is prominently higher than the score of the junior high school students, indicating that the primary school students have a significantly higher level of self-consciousness. In anxiety scale, the score of the left-at-home children whose parents go out to work is prominently lower than the score of the non-left-at-home children and the children whose fathers go out to work, suggesting that parents going out may result in children's emotional problems.Children's Social Desirability Scale results show that there is no significant difference between the left-at-home children and non-left-at-home children, indicating that the left-at-home state does not affect the level of social expectations of children. For all children, left-at-home children, or non-left-at-home children, female children's score were significantly higher than male children's score, while the primary school students also scored significantly higher than the junior high school students. The result shows that female children and the primary school students'fear of disapproval are severally significantly stronger than that of male children and students.KFD Test results show that both the left-at-home children and non-left-at-home children describe the image of the mother are significantly bigger than other family image, which indicates that in the child's sub consciousness, the mother occupies a position of authority. The left-at-home children and non-left-at-home children have no difference on the emergence rate and the position of self-image. No matter the left-at-home children or non-left-at-home children, more images of their parents are outstretched hands. In the image of grandparents, non-left-at-home children have more image faced the paper and omitted the body part. The images of the left-at-home children's father have more hanging hands than the non-left-at-home children. The left-at-home children's pictures show more single activity and more tables, books, newspapers, television, expressing family activities and contacts blocked.Structural equation modeling results show that, the social expectations have effect on the mental health of the left-at-home children in two ways:First, directly impact. Second, indirectly impact through self-consciousness as an intermediary variable. Conclusion:The left-at-home state has a significant impact on children's mental health. Government agencies, families, schools, and even the community should pay sufficient attention to the left-at-home children's mental health education. Government agencies should provide qualified teachers for mental health education positively. Psychological intervention for the left-at-home children should be differentiated. And teachers can interfere with the left-at-home children's social development and then affecting their mental health. Parents should strengthen contacts and communication with the left-at-home children, and pay attention to children's spiritual needs. Social assistance benefits the healthy development of the left-at-home children.
