Previous studies have focused on Lu Yan in his creation of local novels, their results only in the scope of Local Literature framework, with the bold aesthetic of the local public discourse to interpret works, describe the author, while the attention on Lu Yan's intellectual novels was relatively weak; Secondly, critics invariably research him as a realist, without notice of his creation in Modernism.This thesis attempts to jump out of the traditional framework of local realism novels, in the dual background of Chinese and Western culture and literature, re-examine Lu Yan's novel from a new prospect: the description of dreams, sexual awareness, symbolic meaning and psychological tactics; a new interpretation from four aspects of his novel, with emphasis on analysis of the novel elements of Modernism, see how he is in the overall framework of the traditional novel, successfully drew on the content and form of modernism, to mix modernism,realism and romanticism together, created a new literary style,thus made his own contribution to the development of a new modernity .The first chapter is about analysis of the description of dreams in Lu Yan's novel. Through careful analysis of these dreams, we can see the influence of traditional Chinese culture on dream, and the shadow of Freud's dream theory. In the novel, Lu Yan use a variety of fantastic forms, both positive descripition of the sleep state in the Night's Dream, a dream in broad daylight, there are hazy trance fantasy, illusion, there is Organic Fusion of truth and illusion, reality and dream, so his novel is colorful, and is greatly enhanced the ability to reflect life, life guidance, criticized the society.The second chapter discusses the novel's sexual awareness.
