Puccini is the last great figure of traditional Italian opera. He took over the mantle of Verdi, and made unique and important innovation. His music is excellent in melody, the expression is delicate and the psychological portray of the characters is penetrating. Some of his works like La boheme became classical ones in history. La boheme is an opera based on Scenes de la vie de boheme by Henri Murger. The world premiere performance of La boheme was in Turin in 1896 at the Teatro Regio, with a history of more than 100 years up to now. This thesis taking an overview of La boheme through the understanding of Puccini's life, making an statement about the performance of "Mimi" and her characteristics, and making comparisons with other three heroines of Puccini's Tosca, Madama Butterfly and Turandot, among which Tosca in Tosca and Cio-Cio San in Madama Butterfly are the focus. By making a study of Mimi in opera La boheme, this thesis is in the hope of facilitating the multiple analysis and appreciation of the opera. To the opera itself, it followed Puccini's exquisite style in psychological portray. To the main character Mimi,who was a beautiful but poor girl, she struck a chord with the public through the expression of her special determination in love. The analysis of this character has practical meaning.
