Following Giuseppe Verdi, Puccini is one of the greatest Italian opera composer in the nineteenth century, and the last opera master. He is deemed as the representative of Verismo Opera, but his music is far beyond Verismo, and is inimitable. He shaped many women characters who are involved in romantic love, and love is their sole motivation throughout the opera. Puccini writed many beautiful soprano arias for his female roles. Mimi and her soprano arias in《La Bohhme》are classical. This dissertation probes into the shaping of women characters and the performance style in Puccini's librettos, for example"Mi chiamano Mimi"and"Donde lieta usci". First understands Puccini's life experience and the creative background. Reorganize the style features of his opera composition; Then discusses why the attitude toward women lies at the very heart of Puccinis music. And focus on how Puccini dealt with the female protagonist Mimi from the script and the music. And then discuss the general performance features of Puccini's female roles. Focus on studies of Mimi's arias—"Mi chiamano Mimi"and"Donde lieta usci". In the end through comparing the similary and differences of Mimi and Musetta, the two women of La Bohhme, understand how to grasp the female role further.
