Dynasty Qing is the last one of the feudal dynasties of our country. The ending of Dynasty Qing was in a period of turbulence when the new and the old interlaced. The case about Yang Naiwu and Xiao Baicai, one of the four famous astonishing cases, occurred in this period. Until now, many guesses about this case interest people. One factor greatly influenced the case and made it famous among people at that time. It is the newspaper of ShenBao, which was founded in Shanghai, in the 1870s by an Englishman, named Ernest Major. Shortly after its founding, the newspaper paid its attention to this famous case. It had been constantly reporting this case more than three years. Without the immediate, objective, fair and justice reporting from this newspaper, the public were not attentive to and knew this case well; the supreme ruler of Qing dynasty would not care about it and intervened it; and then Cixi couldn't take it seriously, which may make the truth of the case unknown to the public. It was ShenBao that played a vital role in dealing with this case. To investigate the other influences of ShenBao on this case, especially the respect of promoting to the judicial reform in the ending of Dynasty Qing, the historical materials and literature on this case were analysized. ShenBao not only made a report on this case but also took a new role to plead for YangNaiwu, which greatly influenced on promoting the budding stage of lawyers-system in our modern times. With violent words, ShenBao attacked and criticized the systems of inquisition by torture, and secret trial, advocating forbidding these systems, which was a great hit to the rules of Dynasty Qing.
