Myanmar has always been a significant neighbor of China. Before Myanmar’s election in 2010, China and Myanmar had maintained for a long time close cooperation of commerce and trade. China’s investment in Myanmar had therefore made considerable progress. After the election, however, many China-invested projects in Myanmar encountered severe objection from the local people and the Myitsone hydropower project was even suspended. What exactly are the difficulties and challenges Chinese investment has been facing in Myanmar ever since the election in 2010? To answer this question, this thesis has analyzed in detail the risks faced by Chinese investors in Myanmar from the aspects of political situation, business operation and international competition. Politically speaking, uncertainties brought by the reforms and traditional troublemaking factors in Myanmar society such as the local armed forces of ethnic minority groups all would pose a challenge to Chinese investors. When it comes to business operation, the obsolete infrastructure, labor of poor quality as well as the unfriendly attitude of some Burmese towards China and Chinese investment are very likely to increase the operating costs and thus to make Chinese investment subjected to more risks. Besides, as the investment environment in Myanmar gradually improves, an increasing number of countries pay attention to investment in Myanmar. Countries like the United States or Singapore become China’s strong competitors. Against this backdrop, China can only achieve the steady development of Chinese investment in Myanmar when it has clearly understood those above-mentioned risks and carried out corresponding adjustment of investment strategy.
