| 1 The making of one countiy foreign policy is inevitably influenced by her political culture. The idealist tradition in U.S. diplomacy is deeply rooted in the idea of Mission, originated from Puritanism, American national identity and the confidence in their political system. The idea of Mission is a main component of American ideology and shapes the way they deal with international issues. This idealist character, with different significance in different historical period, is typically expressed in the diplomatic practice of US. This article analyses the cultural origins of US diplomatic idealism and its expressions in the practice, seeking to draw a conclusion that the idealist diplomacy tries to extend the American Democracy and Liberty, in their own eyes and minds, into a world model. It somehow the truth that Americans have this moral responsibility and sense of Mission. |
