Foot--binding was the resu1t of moral princip1es and codes whosecenters were the inequa1ity of the sexes and men were regarded as a hub.Foot--binding was the tremendous physica1 damage and spiritua1 shack1esto women. 1n addition, foot--binding has been a serious prob1em in feuda1society of China. With the crashes between Chinese cu1ture and Westerncu1ture and the deepeness of social crises in modern times, thedisadvantages of foot--binding have become more c1ear. There were manygovernments and parties do a 1ot of work to 1iberate the women's feet,such as the Taiping Heaven1y Kingdom, the western mi ssionary and foreignnational, the Wuxu Reformists, the Qing Government, the NanjingProvisiona1 Government and the Northern Government, the Nanj ing Nationa1Government and the Conununist Party of China. At 1ast, foot--binding wasabo1ished in the ear1y period of 1950s.We are c learly aware of the complexi ty, compl i cat ion and protract ionof the reform of social custPm and the difficulty of woInen's 1iberationthrough the study of liberating the woInen's feet. Up to now, the trueemancipat ion of women and exact equa1 ity of the sexes st i11 are the seriousprob 1 ems.
