This thesis is composed of four chapters. The first chapter analyzes the morality in foreign affairs and concludes that morality is an important dimension influencing and explaining a country's foreign affairs. The second chapter summarizes and analyzes the moral elements originating from Chinese traditions in China diplomacy, which include "love others", "rights and benefits", "sincerity and faith", "tolerance" and "peace". The third chapter expounds and proves the moral motivation from socialist ideology, which contains proletarian internationalism, anti-revisonism, anti-imperialism, anti-colonism and anti-hegemonism. The last chapter demonstrates the moral elements from international community, which include the Five Principles of Peaceful Co-existence, peaceful dispute settlement, national self-government and fundamental human rights. The three moral elements originate from China's three identities: a several-thousand-year Oriental civilization, a socialist country and a member in the highly interdependent international community. They interact with each other and well safeguard China's national interests. However, some moral elements run counter against national interests in certain historic periods.
