With the construction and development of Chengdu City, public traffic vehicles have increased rapidly in recent years. As one of the most important cities of the West, the city of Chengdu is far from meeting the needs of development of urban public traffic in the management of public vehicles. Therefore, in order to decrease the rate of vacant taxi, improve the servic level, strengthen the management, control properly the use requency of the public vehicles, enhance therapid reaction ability of the public emergency system, the management and service sysetem of the public traffic of Chengdu City needs a management system of accurate position, fast response, and convenient dispatch to meet the needs of development of the urban public traffic of Chengdu City.As a new technology, GPS(globe position system)has remarkable advantages of high precision, great speed and low cost. It has a great potential in vehicle navigation, system position, monitor and dispatch. How to use GPS technology to provide effective and accurate service for the urban public traffic of Chengdu City has become a pressing subject.By analysing the condition and process of application of GPS system to the public traffic at home and abroad, the author, on the basis of his experience of setting up the first group GPS dispatch service center in thecity of Chengdu, has made a research on the essential factors of market, investment, profit and technology of the application of GPS technology to the public traffic service system of Chengdu, and proposed a set of plans for the commercial application of GPS to the public traffic system of Chengdu City, and on the basis of which the author has also practised and spread the system.
