India has been aspiring after preeminence as a world power for itself since its independence or even earlier. To realize this ambitious goal, successive Indian governments formulated corresponding strategies for the nation's development. As part of its great efforts, the Indian Government worked out and began to put into practice the Look East Policy in September 1991 which was mainly aimed at developing its ties with Southeast Asian countries. In the 21st century, India injects many new things into the policy in a bid to further foster its relationships with members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).China is involved, to a large extent, in the Indian policy, with possible impacts on China's economy, politics, foreign affairs and security, both positive and negative. Objectively speaking, given the factors such as the post-Cold War international situation, difference in the strength and influence of India, the ASEAN and China as well as their need for China, their interaction will not exert too much influence on China. The Indian policy and its practice, however, will surely hold out some challenges and hidden dangers for China. Therefore, it is pointed out China should act in a rational and tolerant fashion as a positive response to the Indian policy and its relations with the ASEAN while strategically attaching great importance and keeping clear-minded without being panic. In a word, China needs to cultivate its relations with India in all fields through developing a new perception and based on solid economic ties.
