India, as an influential developing country in the world, plays an indispensable role in some world affairs. Historically, India used to be a special actor in Sino-American relations. During 1945 to 1955 - a few years since the foundation of PRC, when China and the US were in the period of confrontation, India served as a mediator against Sino-US frictions. On the Tibet issue, although India complained about PlA's entering into Tibet, it did not publicly support Tibet independence which the US government did. Its negative attitude made the US nail-biting.On the Taiwan issue. In order to make Sino-US ambassadorial-level meeting held at an early time, Menon shuttled between Beijing and Washington. Both China and America gave him tremendous praises for his endless efforts. With regard to the Korea issue, India acted as a messenger before China's involvement in the war, a mediator during the Sino-US direct military confrontation as well as an assistant to the implementation of the armistice agreements after the war. Its endeavor played a positive role to end the confrontational status between two sides as soon as possible.During the Geneva Conference, Indian representatives shuttled among all the parties in spite of the US's opposition, its job successfully reduced the disputes, untied the knot and facilitated communications among the parties. From the above, a conclusion can be reached: India, as a mediator between China and the US, subtly changed its stance from even-handed to pro-China, from seemingly neutral to openly speak for China. Many reasons could explain such a change, from economic to political, from historical to individual, from domestic to international, some of which still deeply influence Indian's foreign policy nowadays.
