On The Moral Construction Of The Community In The Process Of Urban Modernization

In the early 21st century, Chinese cities are undergoing the process of modernization. That is, they are transforming from the traditional urban structure to modern city structure. However, the modernization of the city calls for the modernization of the urban residents. In a sense, the process of modernizing its residents is the process of modernizing the city itself. From this point of view, the author puts forward the subject of community moral construction in the process of urban modernization and makes proposals on how to enhance 昪ommunity moral construction.The present thesis falls into four major parts. The first part deals with the relationship between the urban modernization and community moral construction. The author first tries to define the meaning of urban modernization and community moral construction on the basis of examining various theories of modernization put forward by scholars and experts both at home and abroad. Then she points out the necessity of enhancing community moral construction in the process of urban modernization and gives a scientific explanation of the implication of community moral construction. Finally, she states the experience and lessons provided by other countries in then- community moral construction.In the second part, the author stresses the feasibility and practicability of enhancing community moral construction on the part of community itself. In regard to feasibility, such things are taken into consideration as residents' freedom in non-official domain, concept of democracy, residents' public-welfare consciousness brought about by the non-profitability of the community and the spirit of mutual cooperation aroused by the community's non-competitiveness. Practicability mainly concerns with some practical problems existing in the community moral construction, such as the irrational ways of life among some residents, some social-psychological problems caused by social reform as well as the alienation among modern urban residents.In the third part, the author puts forward some fundamental principles of strengthening community moral construction. Among them are the principle of doing something concrete for the people; the principle of taking into consideration both the advanced part and the general masses; the principle of combining education with administration and the principle of doing things in a creative way.The forth part focuses on how to enhance community moral construction. The author thinks that first is to form the main body in the community moral construction-this mam body includes three levels: the local residents, social workers and volunteers; second is to set an aim for the community moral construction scientifically so as to solve the practical problems existing in the community moral construction. Lastly, the author suggests some practical ways of building up virtues in a community.In this thesis, the author has put forward some original concepts of her own. First, she has made a systematic explanation on the implication of community moral construction. Second, she has included the ways of life of the local people into thedomain of community moral construction. Thirdly, she has classified the main body in the community moral construction into three levels.
